CAPTAIN “W” DOMINATES KAJUN SPORTSMAN’S TOURNAMENT!
Wayne Davis’ 57.22-Pounder Wins a Yamaha Powered Contender
by Jack Holmes
Fourchon, Louisiana - Everyone knows that if you want to make the leaderboard in the Kajun Sportsman King Classic, you better not come to the scale light. The 11th annual event once again lived up to its big fish reputation with seven 50s and three 49-pound kings dominating the board. Unlike last year however, a local team, the Captain “W”, took the win and the 23' Yamaha powered Contender boat complete with a Loadmaster Trailer with a beautiful 57.22 king.
Wayne Davis, Clarence Foret and Jimmy Bracato, team Captain “W”, needed the second day to find their trophy fish. After sitting at a rig sitting in 160 feet of water thirty miles from Port Fourchon and only having a 39-pound king to show for their efforts, most teams would look for an alternative place to wet a line on day two but according to Davis, the team Captain, “We went right back to the same area and kept on catching mid to high 30s. We fish this area all the time for snapper and grouper and the water looked real good.” At one o'clock the big king ate a hard tail 25 yards back. “We have caught a king that went over sixty pounds there before,” Davis said before being called to the prize table to accept the Contender late Saturday afternoon. “After Hurricane Katrina we've been so busy in the oil fields,” Davis told me. “And after fishing without a lot of success for the past three years, this is absolutely wonderful. The biggest thing is doing it here at home.” Davis fishes a Mercury powered Fountain.
Five of the top ten teams this year were “locals” while the Pros captured the five other spots.
Another Division 7 team, the Fully Involved, earned second place honors. Bert Baroco, Becky Land, Adam Harrison and Brian Morris slid a 47.88 onto the tournament scales on day one but it wasn't good enough to capture the halftime lead. At 3:30 on day two they were wondering if their king would remain in the top ten but a half hour later a big king skied on a prop washed trolled hard tail. Bert grabbed the rod and the rest of the team sprang into action. “We were fishing 31 miles from Bell Pass in the 94 block and a couple of things became apparent,” explained Bert. “We needed to get this fish in the boat quick and make the five o'clock tournament deadline.” Within 15 minutes the big king was in the boat and with wide open throttles the bow was pointed toward the port. “We got the fish in the bag as we were running and thankfully we made it to the check-in point with two minutes to spare.”
At the dock, the king was hoisted onto the scale and Rick, the weighmaster, shouted out 53.84 giving

the Fully Involved the second best fish of the event. However you do the math, a 47.88 added to a 53.84 totals 101.72. This Pensacola, Florida team had the highest two-fish aggregate of the weekend, better than the winning Pro boat. This will be a weekend they won't soon forget. Becky sure won't forget, she was the event's Top Lady Angler. The Fully Involved is a Yamaha powered Contender, and the team won a Yamaha outboard for their efforts.
Bill Butler's Crawgator, the top Pro team fishing this weekend, captured third with a king just one tenth of a pound smaller than the Fully Involved’s fish, a 53.74. Butler, Steve Jenkins and Rick Ryan caught their biggest fish on the first day of the two-day event. “We gambled and fished the mouth of the Mississippi River,” explained Butler. “We had a 35-pounder in the bag when the big girl hit.” With Ryan on the rod and Jenkins maneuvering the boat, it became a battle of who was winning the fight. “I knew how much drag was on the line and she was eating it up,” said Ryan. But skill prevailed and third place was theirs. While the top slot eluded the trio, they did win the Pro event and the $40,000 top prize. They fish a Yamaha powered Invincible.
Another Pro team, Alden Thornton's The A Team, picked up fourth with a 51.94. Alden, his new bride Alison Perkins-Thornton, and Junior Angler Nicholas Ambrose, who won the Junior honors, scaled their king on day two. Alden and his Mercury Powered Fountain won the Pro event here last year and the Kajun tournament. He has a real knack for finding big fish in the Gulf.
Rounding out fifth place was Team Sebago / Loose Lucy with a 51.75. Mike and Susan Kaminsky and Jimmy and Gary Stecki ran west to the Ship Shoals to find their big king.
Last year’s event saw four kings over 50 pounds with the biggest going 56.29 and it took a 47.91 to make the board.
Also lighting up this year's board was a run of big wahoo. P.J. McLeod's Renegade team was the $1,500 winner with a 71.46 followed by Albert Vrazel's Lured Away with another 71-pounder, a 71.27. A Class boat, Clinton Cochran's Achilles, was third with a 68.83.

Fred Watkins, Jr.'s Get Layed took control of the Class of 23’ by scaling a 43.60. “This was a great weekend, our first Division win,” said Watkins. “The smaller fish were very aggressive. We caught over 30 kings in the 30-pound range and ran out of ribbonfish.”
Their big king was caught by Butch Smith and assisted by Todd Gardner and Ken Jansen. “We fished an area 32 miles due south,” said a happy Watkins. “It was wild! A lot of times we had three fish on and Butch burned his thumb just putting baits out. But what was truly spectacular was when we had a 300-pound Mako hooked up. It jumped four or five times, it was a real sight.” The Get Layed team fishes all the Division 7 events and has fished the Kajun event for the past six years. “We finally beat Cecil,” said Watkins, referring to one of the best fisherman in the Gulf, Cecil Capps. “Cecil is a great friend and has won more than his share of events.” Cecil finished third in the Class weighing a 41.58. Both Watkins and Capps fish a Yamaha powered Contender.
Earning second place in the Class was Cochran's Achilles with Mike Kennedy and Jonathon Graham on board. Second place in the Class and third in Wahoo, a pretty good weekend for the Yamaha powered Sea Hunt team.
The event also offered money for the biggest snapper. The Big “D” picked up a win here with a 25.07 followed by the Quietus with a 16.59. Our Angler of the Year team from 2006, Ron Mitchell's Bandit picked up third with a 16.59.
The Kajun Sportsman's Kingfish Classic is truly a great event, one that prompts most teams to head to Cajun country early in the week. This year was no exception. Big wahoo and tuna in the 200-pound range were caught and filleted for the trip home early in the week. But as usual, if you wanted to pick up a check for your efforts, you couldn't come to the scale light.

A big tip of the SKA hat to the Toups family for all their efforts and Cajun hospitality. The prime rib dinner was superb and the Kajun boil on Friday night was the best. This is one tournament you've just have to experience!
